This course definitely wasn't what I was expecting it to be, if I am being honest.  But from the very first project I chose I realized how it could help with my activism, and in other areas of my life.  My second project was something a little more family oriented, and I figured I could use what I learned in this class to create beautiful pieces for my family, to document things.  Since I have Lupus, I often think of things to leave behind, to document our time here.

Immediately and then throughout the course, I felt like I would like to document my participation in the Walk to End Lupus Now, NYC.  I can't imagine a better project to bring to light the magnitude of support and effort it takes to live a life with Lupus, or to live someone who has it.  Every year, since my diagnosis I have joined the thousands of walkers raising money to help find a cure.  I hope and pray that I see that happen in my lifetime, not only for me but for the countless other warriors that battle this disease daily.  So, even though class will be done - I am still going to make the digital story, because above all else I learned that creating something no matter how small, still makes a difference.

I feel excited - at expanding the way I can tell my stories.  I hope to maybe experiment with animation to tell some of my short stories, too.  For a creative like me, being able to reach my audience in other ways is what I constantly hope to achieve.  It's pretty much the Holy Grail.  In a world of likes and retweets, reach has become so important and knowing your audience might be open to something a little different lights this certain spark, something I can't really explain - but evolution is a most welcomed thing in all my experiences.

My Video Selfie

Selfie I am a writer and my name is Desiree Roundtree.   Most people introduce themselves using their name first, but sometimes I guess I don’t really feel like myself but I always feel like a writer.   I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and I believe that has contributed a lot to my personality.   I am married to a great guy named Damon and we have a daughter named Kaelyn, lovingly referred to as Snips because we are the ultimate Star Wars fans.   I am pretty much a geek – I am a Star Wars fanatic, I collect mugs, I wear glasses, and my dream thesis paper would be to write about the philosophical ramifications of using the Force.   I have Lupus and Fibromyalgia, which sucks but apparently, I am tough since I push through a lot of the issues that come along with it.   I have also been told I am quite the comedian.   I’m just me – crazy and sometimes inappropriate, but always me.

Seven Steps

It was easy to understand how the CDS Digital Storytelling Workshop is successful in achieving an actualized digital storytelling piece by the end of the 4-5 day journey.  The seven steps were broken down as follows: Owning Your Insights Owning Your Emotions Finding The Moment Seeing Your Story Hearing Your Story Assembling Your Story Sharing Your Story This process allows the story facilitator complete control - they learn that the story is theirs to tell, and in order to give it the attention it deserves, they need to know it, feel it, see and hear it, and arrange it - in a way that is beneficial to the plot or original idea. The concept of knowing who to share with is also very interesting, because it is blended with knowing the story you have to tell and who you think would benefit from hearing it.
